Seventeen years ago, I started travelling across Africa — alone, overland, by public means, carrying a notebook and far more questions than answers. And very quickly, I discovered something I could Not unsee. The Africa being sold to the world and the Africa that actually existed were two entirely different places. The brochure version was beautiful, sanitized, and largely dishonest. The real Africa — its people, its complexity, its brilliance, its resilience, its cultures, its contradictions — was being edited out of its own story.
