Today, Wangechi Gitahi Travels turns eight. ✨
Eight years of journeys.
Eight years of stories.
Eight years of building something this continent deserves — and that much of the world has never been properly shown.
But this story began long before the business.
Seventeen years ago, I started travelling across Africa — alone, overland, by public means, carrying a notebook and far more questions than answers. And very quickly, I discovered something I could Not unsee.
The Africa being sold to the world and the Africa that actually existed were two entirely different places.
The brochure version was beautiful, sanitized, and largely dishonest.
The real Africa — its people, its complexity, its brilliance, its resilience, its cultures, its contradictions — was being edited out of its own story.
That gap is where Wangechi Gitahi Travels was born. And filling it — honestly, specifically, intentionally, and without apology — is the work we have committed ourselves to for the last eight years.
A platform built on one belief:
The Africa the world is sold and the Africa that actually exists are two entirely different places.
The gap between them is where our work lives.
Over the years, we have had the privilege of:
▸ Curating immersive journeys across African countries for travelers seeking more than the brochure version
▸ Telling narrative-led African stories trusted by travelers, brands, and industry professionals alike
▸ Creating content for organizations including the United Nations, Kenya Tourism Board, and South Africa’s Ministry of Arts & Culture
▸ Supporting tourism brands, hotels, and destinations through strategy, visibility, storytelling, and capacity building
▸ Building partnerships that contribute toward a stronger, more intentional African tourism industry
▸ Being recognized through awards such as BAKE Awards Best Travel Blog 2019 and the Eco Warrior Award 2018 Runner-Up for promoting people, culture, and heritage.
One platform. Three businesses. One Africa.
To every traveler, client, hotel, destination, partner, collaborator, reader, supporter, friend, and family member who has been part of this journey — thank you.
Thank you for believing in the vision before it was easy to explain.
Thank you for trusting us with your Africa.
Thank you for growing with us.
The work never stopped.
And truthfully, it feels like the next chapter is only just beginning.
As part of our birthday celebrations, we have got eight weeks of newness ahead-new offerings, new stories, and yes…a few little surprises I have been quietly working on-for everyone on this journey with us (family, old friends, new faces, and everyone in between.).
To be among the first to hear what’s coming next, send us an email at hello@wangechigitahitravels.com with the subject line: “Year Nine”.
Happy 8th Birthday to Wangechi Gitahi Travels ✨
